Heat, Blood Pressure and Medication: What to Know

Hot weather can change how the cardiovascular system regulates temperature and blood pressure. Blood vessels near the skin widen to release heat, while sweating increases fluid loss. For some people this can contribute to dizziness, dehydration or low blood pressure.

Hot weather and blood pressure

People taking medicines that affect blood pressure or fluid balance may need particular care during periods of extreme heat. Diuretics, for example, can influence fluid and electrolyte balance. The appropriate response depends on the medicine, dose, health condition and individual circumstances.

Prescribed medicines should not be stopped, reduced or altered simply because the weather is hot unless a doctor, pharmacist or other appropriate clinician advises this. General heat-health guidance such as keeping cool and drinking fluids when appropriate should be followed alongside any condition-specific advice.

Fainting, confusion, severe weakness, chest pain, breathing difficulty or other serious symptoms during hot weather require prompt medical assessment. People with heart or kidney conditions, older adults and those taking multiple medicines may benefit from discussing heat plans with a healthcare professional before very hot weather.
