Humans commonly find sweet tastes and many energy-dense foods rewarding, but there is no single evolutionary switch that explains modern eating behaviour. Taste biology, learning, culture, availability, marketing and individual experience all contribute.

Sweetness can signal carbohydrate-containing foods, while dietary fat supplies substantial energy. These characteristics may have been useful in environments where food availability varied. That does not mean people today are “programmed” to overeat sugar and fat or that individuals with particular preferences possess a fixed ancestral trait.
Brain reward systems are involved in food motivation, including dopamine signalling, but describing dopamine as a simple pleasure chemical is misleading. Eating behaviour emerges from interacting systems that regulate reward, hunger, satiety, habit and expectation.
Modern food environments also differ greatly from historical ones. Highly processed foods can combine texture, flavour, convenience and energy density in ways that encourage repeated consumption, but responses vary between people and products.
Evolutionary explanations can be useful hypotheses, but they should not be used to reduce nutrition to a story of ancient scarcity versus modern abundance. Contemporary dietary guidance is based on current evidence, not assumptions about an ancestral diet.
