Honey as Exercise Fuel: A Carbohydrate Source, Not a Performance Shortcut

Honey is mostly carbohydrate, principally glucose and fructose, so it can provide energy before or during exercise in much the same way as other carbohydrate-containing foods. That makes it a possible fuel source, but not a uniquely effective or “natural” performance enhancer.

Whether extra carbohydrate is useful depends on the activity. A short, easy session may not require specific fuelling at all, while prolonged or high-intensity endurance exercise can increase carbohydrate needs. The amount, timing and form that work best vary between individuals and sports.

Claims that honey offers superior stamina because it is less processed or has been used historically go beyond the evidence. It is still a concentrated source of free sugars, and its nutritional value should be considered in the context of the whole diet.

For people who tolerate it and prefer the taste, honey can be one practical carbohydrate option. Athletes with specific performance, gastrointestinal or metabolic concerns may benefit from advice from a registered sports dietitian rather than relying on social-media fuelling trends.
