Modern sleep medicine did not emerge from one laboratory or one breakthrough. Stanford University nevertheless became an important centre in the field, particularly through the work of William Dement and colleagues who helped establish dedicated clinical sleep research and training.

From sleep research to a clinical specialty
By the mid-twentieth century, researchers already knew that sleep contained measurable stages, including REM sleep. The next challenge was to turn laboratory observations into ways of recognising and investigating disorders such as narcolepsy, sleep apnoea and other causes of excessive sleepiness.
Stanford became one of several centres that helped make this transition. Researchers developed clinical programmes, trained specialists and contributed to the wider use of overnight physiological recording. These developments were part of a broader international history of sleep science rather than a single institution “creating” the field.
Why polysomnography mattered
Polysomnography combines measurements such as brain electrical activity, eye movements, muscle activity, breathing and oxygen-related signals. It allowed clinicians to investigate sleep in a structured way rather than relying only on a patient’s description of tiredness or disrupted sleep.
The technology did not make every sleep complaint objectively measurable, nor does every sleep problem require a laboratory study. Its historical importance lies in helping establish sleep disorders as a field of clinical investigation with increasingly standardised terminology and methods.
A field built by many contributors
It is tempting to describe a famous centre as having “changed medicine forever”, but sleep medicine developed through contributions from researchers in physiology, neurology, psychiatry, respiratory medicine and psychology across many institutions. Stanford’s role is best understood as an influential part of that larger history.
