Sleep science did not emerge from a single discovery. It developed gradually as researchers gained tools to measure brain activity, breathing, eye movements and circadian rhythms, turning sleep from a largely descriptive subject into a measurable field of physiology and medicine.
The electroencephalogram made it possible to observe electrical activity during sleep, while research in the 1950s identified rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and recurring sleep stages. These findings helped establish that sleep is not a uniform period of inactivity. Dreaming is strongly associated with REM sleep, but dreams can also occur outside REM, so the two should not be treated as identical.
Later work expanded the field to circadian biology, sleep-disordered breathing, narcolepsy, insomnia and other conditions. Polysomnography combined several physiological measurements and helped sleep medicine develop as a clinical specialty.
Contemporary research continues to examine memory, metabolism, immune function and waste-clearance processes during sleep. Some mechanisms remain under active investigation, and findings from animal models should not automatically be presented as established human biology. The history of sleep science is therefore best understood as a continuing process of measurement, revision and clinical validation.
