Night work can disrupt circadian rhythms, shorten sleep and increase fatigue. For healthcare staff, that matters not only for personal wellbeing but also for concentration, decision-making and patient safety.

There is no single routine that makes night work harmless. Useful strategies can include protecting a consistent daytime sleep opportunity, using a dark and quiet sleep environment, taking permitted breaks, eating regularly and using caffeine strategically rather than continuously through the shift.

Short naps before or during a night shift may improve alertness where workplace policy and staffing allow, although some people experience temporary sleep inertia after waking. Bright light can also influence alertness and circadian timing, but timing matters and blanket advice is not appropriate for everyone.

Individual coping strategies should not substitute for safe staffing, adequate rest breaks and fatigue-aware scheduling. Recurrent near-misses, severe sleepiness while driving home, persistent insomnia or health problems related to shift work warrant discussion with occupational health or a healthcare professional.
