What a TikTok Content Study Found About Illicit Vaping Messages

A University of East Anglia-led content analysis compared messages about illicit vaping found in TikTok videos with those in educational resources aimed at young people. The study found that TikTok content was often presented as entertaining, glamourising or dismissive of legal restrictions, while educational materials tended to be more serious and less youth-oriented.

The distinction between content analysis and behaviour research is important. The study examined what messages young people may encounter; it did not establish that viewing a TikTok video causes someone to vape or that the platform alone “normalises” illicit vaping behaviour.

The researchers also noted a communication gap. Educational resources were generally of good quality but offered limited information about specific illicit-vape risks and often lacked the tone or relevance that made social-media content engaging.

These findings raise useful questions for public-health communication, platform moderation and enforcement of marketing rules. They also show why health reporting should avoid turning an analysis of online content into a causal claim about young people’s behaviour.
