The stress response is not one single switch. Short-term challenges can recruit sympathetic nervous-system activity and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, changing heart rate, attention, energy use and hormone signalling to help the body respond.

Adrenaline and cortisol are often called stress hormones, but both have normal physiological roles. Cortisol contributes to metabolism, immune regulation and daily circadian rhythms; it is not inherently harmful simply because its concentration rises during a challenge.
Researchers use concepts such as allostasis and allostatic load to describe how repeated or poorly regulated demands may contribute to physiological strain over time. These are research frameworks rather than simple clinical tests that classify an individual as “too stressed”.
Chronic psychosocial stress is associated with health outcomes, but pathways are influenced by sleep, behaviour, socioeconomic circumstances, existing illness and many other factors. It is therefore misleading to suggest that everyday worry simply keeps the nervous system permanently in fight-or-flight mode.
Persistent distress, sleep disruption or physical symptoms deserve appropriate assessment, especially when they interfere with daily life. A general explanation of stress physiology cannot identify the cause of an individual’s symptoms.
