Experimental sleep studies can help researchers examine how reduced sleep affects appetite, activity and metabolism. But a finding from one controlled study should not be translated into a rule that losing a particular number of minutes of sleep will cause a particular amount of weight gain.

What sleep-restriction experiments can show
Researchers can deliberately alter sleep opportunity and measure outcomes such as energy intake, spontaneous movement, glucose regulation, hormones or body weight. These studies are valuable because conditions can be controlled more tightly than in ordinary life.
The trade-off is that experiments are often short and involve relatively small groups. The results may not predict what will happen to every person over months or years.
Sleep and weight are linked through several pathways
Short sleep may influence food intake, appetite, fatigue and willingness to be physically active. At the same time, body weight and sleep are both affected by work schedules, stress, medicines, mental health, sleep disorders and socioeconomic conditions. This makes simple cause-and-effect statements difficult.
The earlier version of this article suggested that around 80 minutes of nightly sleep loss directly produced weight gain and lower activity. Without the original study and its design in view, that degree of precision is not appropriate.
What readers should take from the evidence
Regular adequate sleep is an important part of health, but sleep should not be presented as a weight-loss technique. Persistent sleepiness, insomnia or major changes in sleep can have many causes and may warrant clinical assessment.
