A 2026 cross-sectional study from University Medical Center Groningen examined polyneuropathy in kidney transplant recipients. The study is useful for estimating how common peripheral nerve problems may be in this population and for identifying associated clinical features, but its design cannot establish what caused the neuropathy or how it changes over time.
Polyneuropathy can cause numbness, pain, altered sensation or weakness, but symptoms after transplantation can have several possible explanations, including pre-existing kidney disease, diabetes, medication exposure and other neurological conditions. The findings therefore should not be read as showing that kidney transplantation itself causes nerve damage.
The study, published in BMJ Open, supports careful neurological assessment when transplant recipients develop relevant symptoms. Longitudinal research is still needed to clarify timing, causes and the contribution of individual treatments.
Anyone who has had a kidney transplant and develops new weakness, numbness or persistent neuropathic pain should discuss it with their transplant or clinical team rather than changing medicines independently.
