NHS App AI Triage Rollout: What Is Planned by 2028

NHS England plans to expand AI-supported triage through the NHS App, with the service intended to become available to all app users by April 2028. The tool is designed to ask users adaptive questions and guide them towards an appropriate service or pass structured information to clinicians.

NHS App and AI-supported patient navigation

Possible destinations include general practice, pharmacy, community services, urgent or emergency care and self-care information. NHS England says traditional routes for contacting GP practices will remain available alongside the digital tool.

This should not be described as an AI doctor or autonomous diagnostic system. Navigation and triage are different from making a diagnosis or treatment decision, and the safety of any digital pathway depends on testing, escalation rules, accessibility and clinical governance.

NHS England reported that an initial GP-practice trial in Sussex reduced telephone queuing, but an early operational result does not establish national clinical effectiveness. The rollout will need continued evaluation as it expands.

People with severe or rapidly worsening symptoms should continue to use appropriate urgent or emergency services rather than rely on a general news article or wait for future app functionality.
