Physical Activity in Autistic Teenagers: What the Study Found

Study Highlights Lower Physical Activity and Higher Sedentary Behaviour in Autistic Teenagers

A study comparing autistic and non-autistic teenagers found differences in average physical activity and sedentary time. The findings may help identify barriers to participation, but they should not be used to portray autistic young people as uniformly inactive or deficient.

Activity levels are shaped by more than diagnosis. The study also identified associations with factors such as sex, family income and household circumstances, suggesting that access, environment and opportunity matter alongside individual preferences.

Possible barriers can include sensory environments, transport, cost, social expectations and the design of conventional sports programmes. These factors vary substantially between individuals.

The most useful implication is therefore not simply to tell autistic teenagers to exercise more, but to make physical activity more accessible, varied and compatible with different sensory, communication and social needs.

Because observational studies describe patterns rather than proving causes, future work should investigate which barriers are most important and which forms of support genuinely improve participation.
