Sleep is essential, but asking for the single reason we sleep may be the wrong question. Modern research links sleep to memory, learning, immune and metabolic regulation, brain development and many other processes. Those functions overlap, and no one mechanism explains the whole phenomenon.

Sleep is active biology
Sleep is organised into changing stages with distinct patterns of brain activity and physiology. Research supports roles in memory consolidation and neural plasticity, while sleep loss can affect attention, mood and metabolic regulation. Some studies also examine waste-clearance pathways in the brain, but these findings should not be presented as the one definitive purpose of sleep.
Several theories can be partly right
Restoration, energy regulation, synaptic plasticity, memory processing and evolutionary adaptation are not necessarily competing explanations. A behaviour as ancient and widespread as sleep may have accumulated several functions across species and across stages of life.
This is also why phrases such as ‘the brain cleans itself while we sleep’ can be misleading when used without context. They compress an active field of research into a slogan and can make preliminary mechanisms sound settled.
Animal studies and human studies answer different questions
Some of the strongest mechanistic experiments require animal models or tightly controlled laboratory conditions. Human observational studies can reveal associations between sleep and health outcomes but cannot always establish the direction of causation. Good sleep reporting should state which type of evidence supports each claim.
What is not mysterious
Scientists may debate the complete evolutionary account of sleep, but that does not mean its importance is uncertain. Severe or persistent sleep disruption can affect health and daily functioning, and sleep disorders are established clinical conditions.
