Research in older adults has reported an association between blood vitamin C levels and measures of brain structure and connectivity. That finding is interesting, but it needs careful interpretation: an observational association does not show that low vitamin C causes cognitive decline, or that taking supplements protects the brain.
Vitamin C is an essential nutrient with recognised roles in normal physiology, including antioxidant functions. Blood levels may also reflect broader differences in diet, health status, socioeconomic circumstances or underlying illness. These factors can make it difficult to isolate the effect of a single nutrient in population studies.
The most useful question is therefore not whether vitamin C is a new treatment for cognitive ageing, but whether the association remains after researchers account for competing explanations and whether it is reproduced in other populations. Intervention trials would be needed before concluding that deliberately increasing vitamin C intake changes cognitive outcomes.
For most people, UK guidance favours obtaining vitamins through a varied diet rather than taking high-dose supplements without a clinical reason. Anyone concerned about memory, cognition or possible nutritional deficiency should discuss those concerns with a healthcare professional rather than self-treating on the basis of a single study.
